I am an atheist.

It’s uncomfortable to say that in America.  It’s tough.  From Fenway Park on Sundays (and only on Sundays) when you don’t remove your hat and sing God Bless America during the 7th inning stretch, or don’t pledge allegiance under God every day in school, or are forced to swear the truth on a Christian bible in old school courts (I’m looking at you Georgia), to Presidential candidates (George HW Bush 1987) saying, “No, I don’t think atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered as patriots.  This is one nation under God.”, if you don’t go along with the whole God thing, you are mocked and held to ridicule.  No wonder folks don’t say it out loud.  I am an atheist.

Our country is founded based on a freedom of religion.  So any folks out there who also are atheist, but are afraid come out of the closet, fear not.  The heck with all these folks’ crap.  It’s their crap, not ours.  I am an atheist.

This is part of an interview with Penn Jillette who is talking about his atheism - and a nice plug for the Greenfield, Mass. library.
