I love the game of Ultimate. The game is catching on, now more than 7 million people play around the world in organized Ultimate games. The new pro American Ultimate League is cranking in the US. Amherst High coach Brett Andersen is playing for the Connecticut team, where he makes this absolutely SICK layout catch for a point. It is a spectacularly beautiful game…

It was a long, glorious day. Entertainment value at it’s...

It was a long, glorious day. Entertainment value at it’s peak. 17 innings. Our tickets worked out to $1.53/inning or about $4/hour. You just can’t argue with the value. By the 8th inning we left The Bleachers behind and headed down to home plate. Where we spent the NEXT 9 innings watching the drama unfold. It’s not often you get to watch your $20m superstar go 0-8 and watch two DHs in a serious pitchers’ duel. Darnell McDonald (our DH) and Chris Davis (their DH) were the stars dueling each other with 83 mph fastballs in the 16th and 17th. Adrian Gonzalez was just sad. Their DH has a lower ERA than our DH now. Davis struck Gonzo out ON THREE PITCHES in the game-deciding bottom of the 17th with the tying run at the plate. Six and a half hours after arriving into The Fens, we headed out, feeling sad, but not quite as sad as Adrian Gonzalez.

Some notable facts from the game:
* There was a second 7th inning stretch in the middle of the 14th
* First time since 1925 two position players pitched against each other.
* First time in Red Sox history a cleanup batter went 0-8
* FIrst time since 1905 a pitcher went 0-8 and got the win (Waddell against Cy Young for the Sox - we lost and were in last place then too)
* First AL position player to get a win since 1968
* First AL game since the DH when no DHs were in the game (they were pitching!)
* Sox have lost 5 in a row twice this year, they only did that once in the last 9 years before this.
* Will Middlebrooks hit his first Major league home run - a grand slam to tie the game

Watching Gonzo strike out on 3 pitches against the Orioles DH may have been the saddest at-bat I have ever witnessed in baseball. But hey, what other sport can you witness such carnage for just $4/hour?

Brooklyn Watches.

All politics...

Amherst Town Election - April 3rd, 2012 7am to 8pm

All politics are local. Schools. Taxes. Open Space. Diversity. Jobs. Roads. Small Town Feel. All of these things are controlled, helped, hurt by how our small town is governed. We have a 300+ year-old form of government in Amherst, Town Meeting. Love it or hate it, it has the power.

Next Tuesday, due to redistricting, we will be electing the full body of Town Meeting - every member. That’s 24 people you need to vote for in your precinct. You say you don’t know all these candidates? Don’t know how they’ve voted in the past? What they stand for?

We can help. Andy Churchill, Clare Bertrand and I have researched every candidates’ voting record. We have matched their votes to our values: Protect and enhance Amherst’s quality of life by creating a more fiscally sustainable town that can support strong schools and services; open space; diversity; and a family-friendly, small-town feel, without soaking the taxpayer.

You can see our endorsements here.
http://sustainableamherst.org/2012-candidates/

So. *VOTE* Get out and vote dammit. Have an impact on the things that impact you every day.

* And talk the election up with your neighbors and friends - give ‘em the list and get ‘em out to VOTE!

Coney Island 1970.

A worker checks in a special room where the Parma hams are hung to dry in Langhirano near Parma. Prosciutto di Parma can only be produced in a very restricted area of 29 sq km (11.2 sq mile) around the town of Parma in the region of Emilia Romagna, just north of Tuscany. Around 10 million hams are sold every year, of which about 2 million are exported, mainly to France, the United States and Germany, which each consume about 400,000 a year. (REUTERS, file photo from 2009)
